While at UK and UNT, Ellis has participated in a variety of ensembles and workshops studying symphonic, ethnic, marching, chamber, solo, and improvisatory percussion. He has performed with the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra and the UK percussion ensemble as a featured marimba soloist and has performed at three PASIC conventions, winning the 2002 and 2003 Collegiate Solo Competition in Multi-Percussion.

Ellis has also had the opportunity to study with world class performers/educators from outside the university including Anders Åstrand, N. Outside his university experience, Ellis has marched exclusively with the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps (1996-2001). A member of the snare line from 1996-2000, Ellis served as Drum Sergeant in 1999 and 2000 helping to secure two High Percussion trophies and a DCI World Championship. In his final year with the corps he was Assistant Drum Major, helping lead the Cavaliers to their fourth DCI World Championship.

As an educator, Ellis has been a guest clinician/instructor for the Bands of America Summer Symposium and Yamaha Sounds of Summer Camps.  He served on the Cavaliers Percussion Staff from 2004-2006, Snare Technician and Battery Coordinator for the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps in 2007, and is currently on staff with the 2008 DCI World Champion Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps which secured the Fred Sanford Percussion Award.  In addition to getting his doctorate, he maintains a private studio, is an instructor/adjudicator in the Dallas / Fort Worth area, and a member of the Metro Alliance instructional staff.
